Gorilla trekking in Rwanda is consistently ranked among the world's most extraordinary wildlife experiences. But for first-timers, the planning process can feel overwhelming. Here is everything you need to know before you go.
**The Permit**
A gorilla trekking permit in Rwanda costs $1,500 per person per trek. This fee directly funds conservation efforts and community development around Volcanoes National Park. Permits sell out months in advance — especially from June to September and December to January — so book early.
**Fitness Level**
Treks can last anywhere from 30 minutes to six hours, depending on where the gorilla family has moved. The terrain is steep and can be muddy. You do not need to be an athlete, but a reasonable level of fitness is recommended. Our guides always set a pace that works for every group member.
**What to Pack**
- Long-sleeved shirt and long trousers (even in warm weather — to protect against nettles and insects)
- Waterproof hiking boots
- Lightweight rain jacket
- Garden or gardening gloves for gripping vegetation
- A small daypack with water and snacks
- No perfume or strong-scented products (to avoid disturbing the gorillas)
**The Day of the Trek**
Briefings begin at 7:00am at the park headquarters in Kinigi. You will be assigned to a gorilla family group — each group has a maximum of 8 visitors per day. Your guide and armed ranger will lead you through the forest. Once you locate the family, you have exactly one hour with them. Stay at least 7 metres away and follow your guide's instructions at all times.
**The Moment**
When the forest opens and you see a silverback for the first time, nothing else matters. The hour passes in what feels like minutes. Most guests say it is the most memorable experience of their lives. We have to agree.
